MODERN FARMHOUSE

We envisioned this project as a modern farmhouse for a young couple who wanted to experience countryside living near the bustling city of Bucharest. Their brief was to design a cosy yet contemporary home where they could root their extended family and expand their passion for outdoor activities.

Being a two-storey house inspired by traditional architecture that is usually closer to the human scale, we aimed to create a more grounded feeling by visually reducing its height. We achieved this by layering the facades with two different materials for each floor. The A-shaped roof, covered with metal cladding, extends down onto the upper level, unifying the volume and creating the sense of a continuous protective shield over the home. The lower half is finished in light-toned plaster, providing a soft, neutral base that contrasts with the bolder upper section.

In contrast to the approach for the exterior, we designed a distinctive architectural feature in the interior: a two-story living room. This adds a contemporary touch, providing a sense of openness, inviting natural light in and enhancing this elevated space, making it the focal point where the entire family gathers. The wooden portal marks the main entrance, emphasizing warmth and an inviting atmosphere.

Inspired by the traditional porch, we designed an extended terrace with integrated planters facing the backyard, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

This home offers both modern comfort and timeless charm, where the family can unwind and connect with nature, a peaceful sanctuary away from the noise of the city.
